thoughts on pirating books
listen, i am a pirate through- and- through. but, i'm also an artist and a writer, and i get how shit it feels for your art to not be supported or credited or whatever. so, here are my general tenants for pirating books:
1. if the author is dead, i will happily pirate their work.
2. if the author is a provably awful person, i will happily pirate their work. (think miss wizard terf, although harry potter has its own problems as a book series.)
3. if i am (financially, physically, etc) able to support an independent first- or second-hand bookstore or library to purchase the book, i will always do this first. (if #2 is applicable, i will not purchase the book from a firsthand bookstore. secondhand baby!
4. if the book is by a small author, i will be especially mindful to try to purchase the book from a firsthand location, where possible, so that they are supported directly. bonus points if it's possible to buy the book directly from the author, but this is rarely possible unless they are a very small author.
5. i will almost never pirate an independent zine or anything published my micro/indie presses.
6. if, for whatever reason (financial, physical, etc) i am unable to purchase from a bookstore, purchase from the author, or check it out from the library, i will resort to piracy.
